The Ministry of Agriculture has taken action to ban dark colored bread
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is preparing to ban certain additives used to give bread a brown or black color and flavor. The new regulation aims to prevent consumer deception, and the sector has been given until the end of 2026 to comply.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is preparing a significant regulation regarding certain additives used in bread production. According to the draft, the use of certain components used to give bread a dark color, such as brown or black, and a unique flavor will be banned. This regulation aims to prevent consumer deception and increase transparency in product content.
The draft prepared by the Ministry includes amendments to the existing “Bread and Bread Varieties Regulation” and the “Wheat Flour Regulation.” These changes aim to end the use of certain additives, particularly those preferred for creating visual and aromatic effects in bread.
Within the framework of the regulation, the phrase “roasted malt flour” will be completely removed from the “Bread and Bread Varieties Regulation.” However, ingredients such as roasted malt flour, roasted chickpea flour, and dark malt extract, which are used to give bread a darker color or flavor, will be prohibited in production. Similarly, restrictions on the use of such ingredients will be introduced in the “Wheat Flour Regulation.”
The main aim of the new regulation is to ensure that consumers have access to more natural products with more clearly stated ingredients. Experts point out that the perception that dark-colored bread is always whole wheat or bran bread may not be accurate, and that prohibiting such additives will prevent misleading appearances.
